When You Don’t Know How to Pray

Some days prayer flows easily.

Other days, not so much.

You sit down to pray for your grandchildren and suddenly your mind wanders. You repeat the same phrases you’ve prayed a hundred times before. Or maybe you simply don’t know what to pray because the situation feels too complicated.

If you’ve ever experienced any of that, take heart.

Many faithful praying grandparents have been there.

The solution isn’t necessarily to pray harder. Sometimes it’s simply to pray differently.

ONE OF THE EASIEST WAYS TO REFRESH YOUR PRAYER LIFE IS TO USE PROMPTS.

For example, try praying through your grandchild’s day.

Pray for their morning.

Pray for their relationships.

Pray for their decisions.

Pray for their evening.

OR PRAY THROUGH SCRIPTURE.

Take a passage like Philippians 1:9-11 or Ephesians 3:14-21 and personalize it with your grandchild’s name.

YOU CAN ALSO USE EVERYDAY REMINDERS AS PRAYER TRIGGERS.

Every time you see your grandchild’s photo, pray.

When you pass their school, pray.

When you hear their favorite song, pray.

When you receive a text from them, pray.

Suddenly ordinary moments become invitations to intercede.

ANOTHER HELPFUL PRACTICE IS KEEPING A PRAYER JOURNAL.

Write down requests.

Record answers.

Document ways you’ve seen God work.

Over time you’ll build a testimony of His faithfulness—not only for yourself but for future generations.

Remember, prayer isn’t about finding perfect words.

It’s about bringing the people we love to a perfect Savior.

God isn’t evaluating your eloquence.

He’s listening to your heart.

So, whether your prayers are long or short, polished or stumbling, keep praying.

Faithful prayers offered over time can leave a legacy that lasts for generations.
