When people talk about grandparenting, they often focus on the visible things.
Making memories.
Attending ballgames and recitals.
Hosting sleepovers.
Giving gifts.
Sharing family traditions.
And while all of those things have value, there is something even more important a grandparent can do.
PRAY.
It may not seem as significant as the things we can see and touch. Prayer doesn’t appear on calendars or family photo albums. It often happens quietly, behind closed doors, unseen by anyone except God.
Yet prayer may be the most powerful influence we will ever have in the lives of our grandchildren.
Think about it.
We cannot be with our grandchildren every moment of every day. We cannot protect them from every disappointment, temptation, or heartache. We cannot control the choices they make or the circumstances they encounter.
But we can bring them before the One who sees everything.
The One who knows their struggles before they speak them.
The One who loves them even more than we do.
What a privilege.
As grandparents, we are invited into the sacred work of intercession—standing in the gap and lifting our grandchildren before the throne of grace.
We can pray for their salvation.
We can pray for their character.
We can pray for their friendships, their future, their safety, their wisdom, and their faith.
We can pray when they’re thriving and when they’re struggling.
We can pray when they’re near and when they’re far away.
We can pray when we know exactly what’s happening in their lives and when we don’t have the slightest clue.
Prayer reminds us that while we are limited, God is not.
It shifts our focus from what we cannot control to the One who controls all things.
And perhaps that’s one reason prayer blesses the grandparent as much as the grandchild.
Prayer calms our fears.
It strengthens our faith.
It reminds us that God is actively at work, even when we cannot see it.
Grandparent, never underestimate the impact of your prayers.
You may never fully know this side of heaven how God uses them.
But Scripture assures us that “the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective” (James 5:16).
So keep praying.
Your grandchildren need many things from you.
But perhaps most of all, they need a grandparent who faithfully carries them to Jesus.
