A Grandma Who Prays in Color

Praying in Color!  Have you heard of it?  It’s a method of praying based on the book of the same name by Sybil MacBeth.  I’d heard of it a couple of times but was recently privileged to attend a workshop which included this concept.  And now, I have discovered yet another way to pray for my grandchildren!

The workshop was part of a one day Prayer event held at my church.  The presenter was a woman who after years of struggling herself in her prayer and devotion life was blessed with a breakthrough.  She, “most comfortable with art supplies in her hands and ballet slippers on her feet,” discovered a book entitled Praying in Color by Sybil MacBeth.  In the speaker’s words, “It set her free.”

The basic concept of Praying in Color is to keep your pencil moving while you commune with God.  This, for many, provides focus and keeps the mind from wandering or going blank.  During the session, we actually practiced “Praying in Color” together in the form of intercessory prayer for those in attendance.

In the days following the Prayer event, I considered “Praying in Color,” and how I might give it a try on my own.  Here are a couple of examples of my first attempts at it.

I decided to “Pray in Color” for each of my grandchildren.  And to pray scripture for them as I did.  So I pulled out a sheet of drawing paper, some colored pencils, and the Scripture to Pray for your Grandchildren resource (available under the Free Resources tab).

I have now “Prayed in Color” for five out of our eight grandchildren.  For each one, I began by writing their name in the center of the paper.  As I embellished their name, I prayed for them:  thanking God for each one, thanking Him for the treasure each one is to our family, and thanking Him for their future.  Then I moved to the resource sheet of Scripture to Pray for you Grandchildren.  Allowing the Spirit to lead me, I selected a scripture to pray for that child, wrote it on the paper and embellished it as I prayed.  For each child, the scripture selection has been just a bit different.

Once the page/prayer was complete, I posted the paper on our refrigerator as a reminder to my husband and me to pray for that child throughout the day.  Then the following day, the paper was taken down, folded up, and mailed to the child along with a personal note.

Just seems to me that prayer is so important it shouldn’t be kept a secret.  I believe it vital that our grandchildren know we are praying for them.  So, the “Prayers” were sent to each child (1) so that child would know that Grandm had prayed specifically for them and (2) as a keepsake reminder that Grandma & Grandpa pray for them.
