5 Valentine’s Day Ideas for Grandparents

Grandparents have a unique and important biblical role — pass on a heritage of faith to future generations.

So what does Valentine’s Day have to do with passing on a heritage of faith?  I’m so glad you asked.

Grandparents cannot effectively fulfill their role if they haven’t built a relationship with their grandchildren.  Connections are essential and holidays offer a wonderful time for making fun connections.

Here are 5 fun ideas for connecting with your long-distance grandchildren this Valentine’s Day:

1. Buy a box of Valentine cards and mail them to your grandchild. He/she can address the cards and send them to their friends.

2. Celebrate from a distance by sending candy, flowers, cookies, or balloons.

3. Write out a Valentine card for each of your grandchildren.  Place it in the mail.  (HINT:  We’re grandparents.  It’s our very nature to want each of our grandchildren to feel special, so we are often inclined to address each card separately.  However, these efforts have at times created more harm than goodwill when one child’s piece of mail shows up days later than the others.  To circumvent this possibility, address each card individually and then place all the cards for members of the same family in one large envelope.  All pieces of individual mail arrive at the same time.)

4. Send a Valentine box. Instead of filling it with candy, fill it with a coloring book and crayons, reading books, small games, hair barrettes, baseball cards, or other non-edible treats.

5. Pray in Color for your grandchild.  Focused on Scripture, concentrate your prayer on biblical LOVE.  Then mail your prayer to your grandchild as a special Valentine.
