How to READ THE BIBLE IN CONCERT

Deep in her soul, she knows it is important. – She scrutinized her schedule and carved out the time.  Materials were prepared in advance.  Distractions were minimized.  – She closes her Bible still aching in her soul.

Is this you?
Reading your Bible yet unsatisfied of soul?
Perhaps it is time to READ THE BIBLE IN CONCERT – with other disciplines.  This simple transition is proven to provide more nourishment to your soul and lead to real spiritual growth.  Combining Scripture reading with other disciplines engages us more fully with the text and focuses our attention.  It can be the catalyst to moving your Bible reading time from a “checklist item” to a time of “connection” with God, His grace, energy, and joy.

How to READ THE BIBLE IN CONCERT

READ THE BIBLE IN CONCERT with Prayer

Combine the spiritual disciplines of Bible reading and prayer by praying Scripture.  While each of these disciplines alone is powerful, IN CONCERT they become even more powerful.
Praying Scripture can take several forms such as:  praying the prayers of the Bible word-for-word as your own prayers, personalizing portions of the Scriptures in prayer, or praying through various topics of the Bible.
If you have never tried Praying Scripture, you might find it easiest to begin by praying actual prayers from the Bible.  Try Ephesians 1:16-23, Ephesians 3:14-19, Philippians 1:9-11, Colossians 1:9-14, or 1 Thessalonians 3:11-13.
(See John Piper’s article, Tips for Praying the Word, for several more ideas for Praying Scripture.)

READ THE BIBLE IN CONCERT with Meditation

Slow down.  Read less.  Focus your undivided attention on what you are reading.  Treasure each word on the page.  Read and reread.  Ask yourself what God is saying to you.  Mull it over.  Real spiritual growth occurs when we slow down and THINK.

READ THE BIBLE IN CONCERT with a Soul Friend

Involve a trusted friend.  Ask her to be your “spotter” and give her permission to hold you accountable for reading the Bible.  Better yet, invite her to join you in reading the same passage and sharing your insights.

READ THE BIBLE IN CONCERT with a Journal

Reading the Bible with a writing instrument in hand helps to keep one engaged and focused.   It’s also a great way to slow down and process what is being read.
You might choose to begin by incorporating a “traditional” journaling method:
  • Writing down the things God is teaching you – in great detail or bullet point style.
  • Recording your thoughts, reflections, and questions.
  • Using prompts or key questions as journaling starters.
If “traditional” journaling overwhelms you, another option would be to select a more “creative” journaling style:
  • Creating lists.
  • Illustrating with sketches, stickers, and/or stamped images.
  • Praying the Scripture in Color.
  • Verse Mapping.
The options for READING THE BIBLE IN CONCERT are many.  The addition of Journaling alone, provides a multitude of possibilities.  And how about READING THE BIBLE IN CONCERT with disciplines not listed above such as Self-Reflection or Praise and Worship?

Prayer, Soul Friendships, Worship, Solitude, Self-Reflection, Gratitude, Simplicity, Reading the Bible – some of the traditionally considered methods of Spiritual Discipline.

Long walks, writing, a beautiful sunset, painting, singing, cooking – nontraditional ways of connecting with God.

What energizes you?  When do you feel most connected to God?  Try combining it with your Bible reading.
What pairings speak to you?  Give yourself permission to engage in them this week.
Take the steps to move your Bible reading from one of obligation to connection or from good to better.
Deep in our soul, we know it’s important.
